Göteborg International Film Festival Fund

Festivals have for many years been one of few windows for films from parts of the world we seldom see in the cinemas or on the small screen. Over the years those films are fewer and fewer. It has not become easier to produce films in the poorer parts of our globe. The lack of training, equipment, production facilities, distribution and funding is widening the gap between north and south.

Programming a festival means travelling the world. We are a part of an international network that has incredible knowledge and experience of the world of filmmaking. And that goes also for the world outside the established production environment.

There are some of festival funds operating in Europe today and Hubert Bals Fund of Rotterdam is the biggest one and the mother of us all. Göteborg International Film Festival Fund has learned a lot from Rotterdam and we have a close and ongoing cooperation. What we have in common is among other things the fact that we would be nothing without our governments. In our case it is the cultural department of SIDA (the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency) that provides the necessary means for our operations.

Over the years we have worked out a practice that today is the base for everything we do. We operate in three areas. We support development of projects, we support post production and distribution. But we also involve ourselves in workshops and training initiatives and we can also provide technical equipment - all directed to the really underprivileged which can hopefully help the growing of locally based film industry.

The following is a presentation of what the Göteborg International Film Festival Fund has been involved in over the eight years of its existence. An amazing list of efforts, a proof of creativity expressed under mostly hard conditions.

During the last three years the fund has grown and so has the challenge. We will continue to open up new windows, be present at still more local film events, support even more workshops and training initiatives and above all do what we can to bring life to the still untold stories.
